Allies are straight people who support equal rights for LGBT people.

Are You an Ally?                       Video that is 10:18 in duration     Watch the video near the bottom of the page marked “Our Story.”

In a world where we hear stories of discrimination, harassment, bullying, and violence it simply isn’t enough to say “I have a gay friend” anymore. Come out as a straight ally, set an example for those around you and help make sure the next generation is not burdened with the same problems we face today. Standing up for the important people in your life can have an immeasurable – and sometimes lifesaving – impact on their lives. Letting them know that you support them, with not only words but actions, is one of the most important things that you can do for them.

Straight allies have a unique voice that can be extremely persuasive when it comes to issues of equality because they won’t directly benefit from policy changes or new laws being passed. We so often hear that people are involved in the equality movement because “it is the right thing to do” or because “all people are equal” which have greater impact among some audiences coming from a straight person. The GLBT community needs straight allies and we hope that Straight for Equality will help to invite, engage, and educate more and more people.

So come out, speak up, and join in! Sign the Straight for Equality Pledge, like us on Facebook, or follow us on Twitter, to find other ways to stand up for equality!

Why Get Involved?  “As straight Americans we have two choices: we can choose to sit back and enjoy our rights as we have them, or we can realize that it is actually not freedom at all when our friends, family, neighbors, and colleagues do not share these basic rights.  -Jack Antonoff  read the entire article here
